Spirits: Creativities from beyond /

TCDC Bangkok

Fear is part of the human condition. It stirs the imagination and is a key component of the survival instinct.

Fear drives us to use our imagination to understand phenomena that our logic and the five senses are at a loss to explain. It is a source of many of the rules that bind society together, and it can be a source of inexhaustible wealth for the people of Thailand.

Join the search for the source and reason for our feelings of terror. Travel back through a very long history of countless attempts to conquer our fears. These attempts are “cultural artifacts” found at all strata of society. Today when traditional beliefs are wedded to modern technology, convenience, and specialized skills, the result is business from a “parallel world” with a tremendous profit potential.

Step inside a world where fear is the intangible cost of turning a riotous imagination into very real stories, images, and sounds – where nightmares become fiction, comic books, radio plays, and movies. Fear is the essential ingredient of an entertainment industry that can add just as much to the country’s economic output as any other part of the creative economy.

The exhibit concludes with some “haunting” thoughts from people who have managed to bridge the “spirit world” and the world of business, and with reflections from other individuals who have found creative ways to dealing with all the instinctual fears they just can’t shake.
